Behind every protected farming community is a story of transformation, perseverance, and impact. In the heart of Manjacaze district, Memo is one such story—a community that has gone from despair to abundance, one harvest at a time.
In 2019, tragedy struck when a community member lost their life in a desperate attempt to chase elephants from their fields at night. The crops they relied on for survival seemed impossible to protect, and the future felt uncertain.
Fast forward to today, Memo is thriving under the protection of an electric fence safeguarding 8 hectares of farmland. This initiative, part of our Protected Farming Communities, benefits 52 families and has transformed once-vulnerable fields into a vibrant mosaic of maize, rice, sweet potatoes, cashews, bananas, and sugarcane.
For the first time in years, these families can cultivate their land without fear of destruction. Their smiles speak volumes about the difference this initiative has made in their lives.
But this isn’t just about crops. It’s about empowerment, resilience, and coexistence. Memo, renowned for its rich natural resources and agricultural potential, now stands as an example of what happens when people and wildlife thrive together.
Thank you to the community of Memo for trusting us and for showing what’s possible when we work together to protect livelihoods and biodiversity. This is the impact we strive for.
